Why do some instruments transpose?

I find it difficult to explain to the uninitiated the concept of “transposing” instruments. The what is confusing. The why is worse.

To get the what across, I usually have to resort to an example: “Okay, so it works like this. If I am playing an alto saxophone, and I see an F-sharp on the page, I think ‘F-sharp,’ and do the correct fingering for F-sharp, and then I blow into the instrument and an A comes out.”

Sometimes a visual representation is useful (here are transpositions for some common woodwind instruments):

This system is, shall we say, “difficult:”

  • Composer/arranger/copyist: “What was that transposition for alto flute again? A fourth, I think, but was it a fourth down or a fourth up? Or was it a fifth?”
  • Conductor: “Let’s see, the alto saxophones have an E and a B, the tenor has a D-sharp, and the baritone has a D-natural. So that chord would be, um…”
  • Educator: “Okay, everybody play a B-flat scale. I mean, ‘concert’ B-flat. So C for clarinets and tenor saxophones, G for altos and baritones, E-flat for English horn… or is it F for English horn?…”
  • Gigging musician: “I need to buy the fakebook in E-flat. Hmm, and I guess I also need the B-flat, in case I play clarinet on anything. I wonder if I’ll need the C book for flute, too? Wait, let me make a phone call.”

(And that’s just the system used for the modern band and orchestral instruments!)

So why are we stuck with this bizarre system? The transposing system does actually have some benefits, though really only to the players of transposing instruments:

  • A clarinetist, for example, only needs to learn one set of fingerings, and can use them on all members of the clarinet family. Additionally, all members of the clarinet family read from parts written in treble clef, even the very low-sounding members. Thus, a clarinetist can associate a certain notated pitch with a certain fingering, no matter how large or small the instrument. The same is true for all major modern woodwind families.
  • There is a certain degree of fingering similarity across woodwind families. All major modern woodwinds have a “natural” scale that begins with seven fingers down (three middle fingers of left hand, three middle fingers plus pinky of right hand), and more or less proceeds diatonically up a major scale by lifting one finger at a time, starting from the lowest one (RH pinky). For flutes, oboes, clarinets in the upper register, and saxophones, this is a written C scale. For bassoons and clarinets in the low register, this is a written F scale.
  • In general, this means that “easier” keys (with fewer sharps and flats) use simpler and more intuitive fingering schemes.

In some cases, instruments families with members in different keys may have arisen to simplify technical matters: early clarinets, for example, weren’t well suited to chromatic playing, so instruments of different sizes were necessary to make it possible to play in any key. In other cases, artistic choices may have been a driving force: tenor saxophones were originally available in both C and B-flat, with the larger B-flat intended for military band use and the C (now known as the “C melody” saxophone) meant for orchestral playing. But orchestral composers who wrote for the tenor (such as Ravel and Prokofiev) seem to have preferred the B-flat. The C instrument never caught on in any standard ensemble instrumentation.

The canon of repertoire has also perhaps helped determine which instruments have staying power. For example, an argument could be made that modern clarinets in B-flat and clarinets in A are so similar as to be redundant, but composers have written widely for both over several centuries, and so both instruments remain in common use. On the other hand, the nearly-obsolete piccolo in D-flat, once common in wind band music, has now essentially been replaced by the piccolo in C (difficulties of the Stars and Stripes Forever trio notwithstanding); modern editions of wind band works from the D-flat piccolo era include transposed (er, de-transposed) parts for the C instrument.

Pros and cons aside, we appear to be stuck with this system for the foreseeable future. This means that musically-literate people need to know transpositions for at least the most common instruments (woodwinds and others). Remember that the transposition includes an interval (such as “minor third” for E-flat clarinet) and a direction which changes depending on which kind of transposition you are doing (write E-flat clarinet parts down a minor third from where you want them to sound, and they sound up a minor third from where they are written).

  • What does it mean to “interpret” music?

    As a new undergraduate music student I was often frustrated by my teachers’ attempts to get me to “interpret” music.

    I would play something, and my teacher would stop me and ask me to play it louder. I would play again, but this time it was too loud, too slow, too fast, too staccato, not staccato enough.

    I didn’t understand yet the purpose or the process behind musical interpretation. My teachers seemed to have excruciatingly specific ideas about how each and every note of the piece should sound. I couldn’t wrap my head around how they were making these seemingly arbitrary decisions, or how they expected me to guess correctly what they were thinking.

    To be fair to my excellent teachers, there’s a strong chance that the problem was on my end, not theirs. But here’s what I wish I would have understood at that point.

    • When faced with a foreign language, one might rely on an interpreter to explain what is being said.
    • When dealing with some raw data, a researcher might interpret the data to show how some pages of numbers, which don’t make sense without context, support a hypothesis.
    • When performing a musical work, a performer interprets the piece to help the audience understand what’s happening.

    Here are just a few examples of things in a piece of music that might need interpretation for the audience’s benefit:

    • Where does one phrase end and the next begin?
    • Are there melodies, textures, or other ideas that repeat in important ways throughout the piece?
    • What moods, characters, etc. does the music portray?

    You might spend months getting to know the piece, but your audience might be hearing it for the first time. You need to point out the important things to them, so they hear the story, not just a bunch of notes.

    When you speak, you offer a variety of clues about how to break up what you are saying into comprehensible chunks. You probably do it without thinking much about it, but it involves things like the pitch, volume, and speed of your voice. To interpret music, you use similar tools: you might demonstrate that a musical phrase is ending by slowing down a tiny bit and bringing the volume down. Or you might help the audience hear what you believe is a warlike quality in a certain passage by using bombastic accents and a strict, military-inspired tempo.

    All of this requires you to have opinions about the music. Two tour guides might give different tours of the same place, because they have different opinions about what is interesting or important—they are each interpreting. You might personally enjoy one tour more than the other, but it doesn’t mean either is wrong.

    Your interpretation of the music should be based on synthesizing lots of factors. One of the most crucial ones is hints from the composer, so pay close attention to any markings or words the composer uses. (Sometimes they are in a foreign language—it is your job to find out what they mean.) Your interpretation might also be informed by tradition: maybe there is some broad consensus among performers of the piece that it should be played a certain way. That doesn’t mean 100% that you have to go along, but it’s something you should think seriously about. If you are collaborating on the performance with other musicians, you’ll need to work out some agreement with them about various aspects of interpretation.

    If you think all of this sounds difficult or complicated, you aren’t wrong. But if you understand what musical interpretation is and why it’s important, you can start to absorb your teachers’ interpretive ideas in a more meaningful way. You can listen to recordings of great performers and steal their interpretive ideas (this is allowed, and even encouraged!). And you can start to use what you have been learning in your music theory and music history classes as fuel for your own interpretive decisions.

    As a brand-new freshman music major I was content with my performance if I played the right notes at the right times. That’s important, but it falls pretty far short of the satisfaction and achievement of a meaningful musical interpretation. Keep at it!

  • Thinking through scales

    My university woodwind students have to pass a scale exam as one of the requirements to progress in their degree program. They have to be able to play major scales and three forms of minor scales, plus arpeggios, through the “full range” of the instrument, from memory.

    Many of my students learned their major scales in their school band programs, well enough to have most of them in muscle memory. But some of them are less familiar with the minor scales.

    It can be a little overwhelming to keep track of 48 different scales. With plenty of accurate repetitions my students can get to the point of muscle memory for all 48. But in the meantime sometimes they get stuck trying to remember the right notes for the next scale, or get mixed up and play the wrong one.

    I find it very helpful to have a mental roadmap for thinking through the next scale, and especially so if I can relate it to something I already have in muscle memory. My map might go something like this, but there are lots of possibilities:

    • C major scale: already in muscle memory, little or no “thinking” needed. As I play, notice the first, third, and fifth scale degrees, so I can use them in the next step.
    • C major arpeggio: first, third, and fifth degrees of the scale I just played.
    • C natural minor scale: since it’s a minor scale, I’m going to lower the third from E to E-flat. And E-flat major is the relative key to C minor, and I have E-flat major in my muscle memory, so I can play that same pattern of notes without too much thought.
    • C harmonic minor scale: now that I’ve got C natural minor under my fingers, I just need to change one note to produce the harmonic minor: B-flat becomes B-natural.
    • C melodic minor, ascending: this one is just like the C major scale I played a minute ago, but lower the E to E-flat.
    • C melodic minor, descending: this one is just like the C natural minor scale (related to E-flat major) that I played a minute ago. Notice the first, third, and fifth scale degrees, so I can use them in the next step.
    • C minor arpeggio: first, third, and fifth degrees of the scale I just played.

    Another approach that appeals to some of my students is to think in terms of scale degrees: start with the major scale that’s already in muscle memory, and remember that for, say, harmonic minor, you have to lower the third and the sixth.

    Having an organized way of thinking through the scales helps prevent the paralysis and overwhelm of trying to conjure up the whole scale from nothing. When my students take their exam, nobody minds if they take a few moments to think before they start playing, but getting stuck mid-scale would be a problem.

    As you get better and faster at thinking through the scales, a good way to push yourself is to use a metronome, and limit yourself to a pre-set amount of time before the next scale starts. Maybe a certain number of beats (or, ultimately, zero beats) before jumping into the next one. If that doesn’t go well in the practice space, you know that particular transition is a problem spot, and can reorganize your efforts accordingly.

  • Things that aren’t jazz

    Okay, first of all: what I’m talking about here is the “mainstream” jazz tradition, insofar as such a thing exists (you can make a good argument that it doesn’t, really). “Jazz” is a wide net to cast. To flip it around, if I were going to list things that aren’t “classical” music, I might say “use of the electric bass guitar” or even “microtonality.” Are those things really mutually exclusive with classical music? No. But they are not part of the tradition of the Viennese masters, not what your local community orchestra would play, not what most people think of when they think of classical music.

    One misconception that many classical musicians seem to have about jazz is that since it has strong improvisatory elements, it must be very free and unstructured. I think the opposite is true: improvisation, at least in the mainstream-bebop/hard-bop-influenced style, requires fairly strict structural underpinnings. None of the following works well when someone is trying to improvise:

    • Free forms. Form in jazz is much stricter than in classical music. Most common jazz tunes have one of two forms. The first is precisely 32 bars in 4/4 time, with four eight-bar sections: AABA. The second is precisely twelve 4/4 bars, a “blues” form. Anything that doesn’t fit exactly into one of these categories is most likely very closely related to one of them.
    • Free harmony. Bebop and hard-bop jazz are extremely tonal. While improvisers may play pitches that fall “outside” the chords, it is almost always within a tonal framework: the notes function as upper extensions of the chords, or at least they are used in a sort of polychordal way that has reference to the underlying harmony and will ultimately resolve back to it. The idea that “there are no wrong notes” isn’t exactly true; notes can definitely sound very wrong if they aren’t properly contextualized with regard to the harmony.
    • Free or changing meter. Jazz makes frequent use of polymeter and syncopation, which can give the impression of shifting meter, but most jazz doesn’t actually change meters, especially in improvisatory sections. The polyrhythms and syncopations work because they are overlaid on an unchanging metric pulse, and resolve to it.
    • Rubato. Tempi also tend to quite strict in jazz playing. A musician might “lay back” in the beat or stretch a rhythm, but the underlying pulse doesn’t change. (In my experience, jazz players generally have much steadier internal metronomes than classical musicians.)
    The freedom that improvisers do have is to create melodies over these fairly rigid structures. The rigidity gives the improviser a predictable framework to work with (or perhaps against). At a more detailed level, there are certain melodic characteristics that classical musicians tend to associate with jazz, that I don’t hear when I listen to jazz or play with fine jazz musicians: Read More “Things that aren’t jazz”
  • Preparing a focused mind

    I find that in performance my mind isn’t always focused on what I would like. I’m easily distracted by conditions in the performance space, audience reactions, or, especially, the ways that my playing isn’t everything I would like it to be.

    When I get distracted, and especially when it turns into negative self-talk, it’s easy to spiral. I feel bad about my playing, so my playing gets worse, and then I feel worse still.

    When I talk about this phenomenon with my students, often their strategy is “just don’t think negative thoughts.” Maybe that works for them, but it sure doesn’t for me. Rebuking myself for having negative thoughts doesn’t really improve my frame of mind mid-performance.

    Instead I find it helpful to focus on something positive and constructive. And in the heat of battle it can be hard to think of something, so it helps me to pick one out in advance. In other words, I have an advance plan for what to focus my mind on if and when it starts wandering in unhelpful directions.

    The best positive thing to think about might depend on what works for you. But as a woodwind player, my go-to thought is air. I focus on the sensations of air moving through my body and into the instrument.

    This works well for me for a few reasons. Because air is at the core of my tone production technique, paying attention to it usually helps me play a little better. If I’m taking good breaths, my brain and body are better oxygenated and able to function better. And air is closely tied to expression, so focusing on it can help my thoughts redirect toward that. Plus, air is a relaxing thing—lots of meditation and mindfulness practices use breathing as a method to achieve calm and clarity.

    Having a plan like this gives me an easy way to get past a distraction and return my thoughts to the moment. Good luck!

  1. But what about trumpets in B-flat which play a B-flat without any valves, and the trombone/baritone, etc in C which also play a B-flat in first position/open?

    1. Another complication of transposition, baritones are technically “Bb” instruments, but read concert-pitch bass clef. Baritones/Euphoniums can read treble clef, Bb-transposed parts (essentially trumpet fingerings), or they can read bass clef and tenor clef in concert pitch. So the “open” notes are C (etc) in treble clef, or Bb (etc) in bass and tenor clef.

      Similarly, the brass instruments get things like double horns (Bb and F horn together), and tubas are commonly found in C, Bb, and F, and C trumpets are the preferred choice for most orchestral parts. Yay transposition! :)

      1. WHY?? Why oh why are euphoniums & baritones taught a different set of fingerings / taught to play in concert rather than in Bb like trumpets? My open fundamental on trumpet is Bb which I call C, and my daughter’s fundamental on euphonium is the SAME base note – Bb – but she calls it Bb… same note! so why are the tenor/bass instruments learning to read concert pitch while trumpets / soprano brass are reading in the transposed keys? to what end I ask??

  2. When playing alto flute [“in G”] from treble clef, I use transposed fingerings [e. g. D is three fingers, left hand] ; up an octave from bass clef, I imagine soprano clef and add a flat or drop a sharp.

  3. Okay – given that lots of instruments have to transpose, the question now is why are they pitched in the keys they are pitched in? Most common keys are Bb, Eb, with D, A and F making up most of the rest. Given that there are 12 keys in which an instrument could be pitched, why is that they are in one of the five keys given above? Is it a mechanical effect? Please explain…

  4. I am a flutist with perfect pitch. The few times I was asked to play an alto flute part, I would finger the notes I saw in the music, and completely ignored the notes coming out of the flute. It’s very confusing for me to hear notes other than what is written on the page. Another time when I dabbled briefly in baritone horn, I chose to play the bass clef parts because those are in concert key, even though I don’t read bass clef well at all.

  5. I´m tuba player and I am working a thesis on this topic, where I consider why trumpets, french horn and euphonium/baritone horn are still transposing in 2026.
